UCF to Host Laryngectomy Conference
The Ulster Cancer
Foundation (UCF), in association with the National Association of Laryngectomy Clubs, will be hosting a conference for laryngectomy patients, carers and health professionals.
Liz Atkinson, Head of Care Services at UCF said, “The conference will cover a wide range of topics of interest to those affected by laryngeal or throat cancer. The focus will be on quality of life issues and the practical aspects of living with the disease.
“The conference promises to be an interesting and informative day for patients and carers alike. Marilyn Jones, President of NALC will be our guest speaker and will relate her personal experiences as a laryngectomy patient. Other guest speakers include Ivor Smith, NALC Vice-President, Mr Dave Brooker, Consultant Head & Neck Surgeon at RVH, Dr Nigel Ruddell, Assistant Medical Director Northern Ireland and Cecelia Whitehorn, from CM Works who will talk about the many issues that families experience following a diagnosis
of laryngeal cancer.
“Other highlights include a demonstration of emergency first aid procedures for the laryngectomy patient by the Ambulance Service.
“The day will also be something of a social event as we have planned a tour of Parliament Buildings after lunch. I would therefore encourage all laryngectomy patients and their carers to come along to what will be an enlightening and enjoyable event.
UCF provides a comprehensive range of support, information and services for people who are living with this condition including support groups, counselling
